As the summer winds down and that autumn crispness is in the air, many people turn their attention to getting organized indoors. Closets are often high on the list of things to do. Switching the clothes for the new season, organizing and getting rid of what is not needed. The data closet at your workplace may need the same kind of attention.
The data closet is an important part of your communications network. If it is disorganized, it is more difficult to add new equipment, make repairs and install upgrades. If it is really disorganized, someone trying to make a repair could pull the wrong cord and make the situation worse by turning off something that was previously just fine. Additionally, if nothing is labeled then you can be sure it will be an enormous effort for anyone to repair or replace anything in the data closet.
Ideally, when the data closet is created it will be set up correctly with all the switches and cords labeled accurately and installed in a logical and ordered manner. When the KTS team sets up a new data closet we make sure it is operational and orderly.
Sometimes, though, when we enter a customer’s workplace for the first time and look inside their data closet occasionally we find a mess, complete disarray (see photo 1). A tangle of wires, crisscrossed and interlaced, poorly labeled or not labeled at all, adds chaos to the situation making any work in the data closet more difficult and time-consuming than it should be.
Recently, we discovered a chaotic data closet while working at a customer site. When brought to the attention of the customer, they asked if we could fix it. We could, and we did. Read the case study to learn how KTS turned the chaos into order leaving this customer with an organized, accurately labeled and easy to access data closet.
An organized data closet is good for everyone. Getting and keeping it organized saves:
- Time If the data closet is organized occasional issues and outages are identified and fixed efficiently.
- Productivity If issues can be easily identified and addressed because the data closet is orderly, then down-time is minimized, decreasing any impact on productivity.
- Money Lost productivity is lost time and lost time is lost money. Getting and keeping your data closet accessible and organized is good for the bottom line.
