There are some lessons we learn from our dads that just stay with us. Lessons like, “Leave it better than you found it.” This applies to so many areas of life, from picking up after yourself at the park, to pushing in your chair at a restaurant, to attentiveness to detail in the workplace. At KTS we pride ourselves on leaving things better than we found them.
This goes beyond making sure the work that we do is top-notch and that our customers have the connections they need. This means taking good care when we work in historic buildings so that when our work is finished, what we have installed is as unobtrusive as possible and does not detract from the character of the building. It also means cleaning our workspace when we’ve finished, so that it appears like we were never there.
And then there is the data closet. The data closet is often a door that people walk by without a second thought. But the data closet is an important location in the workplace. It is the home to the connections and wiring that keep communications up and running. Routers, network switches, firewalls, circuit breakers, patch panels and more can be housed in a data closet. There is a lot going on behind that door and it is vital to your IT team. If the wiring is disorganized it can make troubleshooting issues, installing upgrades or adding new workstations difficult; disorganized wiring and wiring racks can cause delays in diagnosing and repairing problems. One recent job was specifically focused on cleaning up the data closet that another team had left a mess.
Ensuring your IT team can find what they need in the data closet is part of our job when we install cabling, access points, switches and data racks there. Dad was right, leave it better than you found it.
