Boston Area Hospital Structured Cabling Upgrade

The Work

The campus has a central parking structure and four outdoor satellite parking lots, all of which needed upgrading. The work involved upgrading all the existing gates and adding several new gates, installing badge readers at the parking exits and installing cabling for pay stations throughout the hospital.

Structured cabling was pulled from the nearest data closets to the parking attendant’s office in the parking structure and to each of the gates in the building.

Three of the satellite parking lots were too far from data closets to run cabling directly back to the closet, so KTS installed a new termination point closer to these lots. KTS was able to use an existing cabinet – that had housed old gate relays – to house the data switch, fiber cable and gate cables.

Challenges

New bypass conduits needed to be installed running from a manhole to the gate pedestal since existing conduits were crushed.

Since the original conduits had been in place for a while, the hand holes were covered up and buried under grass. We had to consult old as-built drawings of the conduit system to determine where the missing hand holes were.

Benefits/Impact

The parking structure and satellite lots had their access gates upgraded. Parking lots that previously had no gates now have them. All exits were equipped with upgraded badge readers to improve employee access to parking lots and to increase safety for employees and security for their vehicles. Pay stations were installed at various points in the hospital for the convenience of patients and visitors. Now parking at this hospital is more secure and efficient for everyone.
