The prestigious Groton School is located 40 miles west of Boston in the picturesque New England town of Groton, MA. The Groton School had a challenge common for campus settings: ensuring reliable cell coverage and security across campus. An additional challenge for them, and for many institutions in the region, was to install modern technology in historic buildings. They needed a partner they could rely on to get the job done and do so in a manner that preserved the buildings’ interiors and exteriors.
Groton School connected with KTS to address issues in two popular areas of the Groton School campus, the gym and the hockey rink, both of which needed reliable cell coverage. KTS worked in a tight timeframe to design and install cellular BDAs (bidirectional antennas to make sure that the cell coverage in the gym and hockey rink went from spotty to reliable and constant. The project was a success and KTS became the Groton School’s partner in tackling other cellular challenges across the campus.
The next issue we were asked to address was the need for improved cellular coverage in what is fondly known as “The School House”, the 1899 building that is the heart of the campus. KTS was Groton School’s choice because of their expertise in working with older buildings while updating the technology to serve the staff and the students. KTS recommended the use of BDAs to improve the wireless coverage in the School House.
The next project KTS was asked to take on was the issue of spotty Wi-Fi and limited bandwidth due to increased demands on the school’s data network. The solution to the problem was cable installation of wireless access points in five residence halls and administrative buildings across the Groton School campus. This was challenging because of the architecture of these older buildings. KTS was able to deliver their services in the tight timeframe required during a school break, while protecting the structure and architectural beauty of the buildings.
To ensure student safety, Groton School then requested that KTS troubleshoot the fiber optic cable that supported the campus fire alarm system. This project required standardization of the fiber optic system campus-wide to ensure that the fire alarms were operating within acceptable DB levels.
Throughout all these projects, the KTS team has worked with the Groton School’s IT and facilities departments, to make important improvements to campus communications and safety.
